Existing Cottage Extension and Brand New Build
The weatherboard cottage existing on site was integrated with a pergola to control the solar penetration and extended with a two storey contemporary addition to its side. The connection between the two builds was realised via an angled stone al fresco area that well linked the cottage to its more contemporary addition built in sustainable weatherboard panels. The contemporary two storey addition is sympathetic to the streetscape and does not compete with the original cottage by imitating its scale and materials or altering its fabric extensively rather the additional living areas are separate in a modern and sustainable living area. The external permeable paving area whilst reducing reflectivity and increasing the landscaped percentage of the site, is also connected to underground water tanks out of view therefore reducing the use of resources.

The owner of this six bedroom weatherboard cottage desired to add a second storey level with separate entrance for each of her two adult daughters, additional garage, front and rear decks. The garage involved some additional work that resolved some structural issues that had been neglected as well as remedial works for flooding. A lift was also added completely integrated in the design as well as a modern colour palette well suited to the seaside location. The design result was a stunning contemporary addition to the street that successfully met all of Council’s regulations and to the satisfaction of all involved.
